The East Aegean Network (EAN) project aims is to provide high speed and low-latency interconnection not only between the Data Centers (in Heraklion and Kapitan Andreevo) but also serve the intermediate Greek islands and facilitate very high-capacity wider international connectivity via the island of Crete to the SE Mediterranean at the one end and towards the Eastern Balkans/Black Sea on the other end.
Scope
´The East Aegean Network (EAN) project aims is to provide high speed and low-latency interconnection not only between the Data Centers (in Heraklion and Kapitan Andreevo) but also serve the intermediate Greek islands and facilitate very high-capacity wider international connectivity via the island of Crete to the SE Mediterranean at the one end and towards the Eastern Balkans/Black Sea on the other end.
´The project will deploy around 1500 km of high-speed and reliable fiber-optic communication Gateway between Kapitan Andreevo (Bulgaria at the tri-border area between Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria) and Heraklion Greece). The route will span the Aegean Sea and consist of a submarine cable (approx.. 1300 km) between Alexandroupolis and Heraklion with branches at the intermediate Greek islands of Karpathos, Rhodes, Kos, Ikaria, Samos, Chios, Lesvos, and Limnos, and around 190 km terrestrial cable from Alexandroupolis through the E85 road to Kapitan Andreevo.
´WINGS ICT is the project coordinator for managing and facilitating all project activities, while FIBERGRID assumes the role of the technology lead, infrastructure provider and subsequently owner and operator of the deployed network. The Ministry of Digital Governance is supporting with permitting and regulatory processes/procedures that involve approvals and expert opinions from a diverse number of state authorities.
